Controlling the Blood

Take a handkerchief, paper towel or tissue and insert it inside the nose. This will prevent excessive bleeding which can be messy indeed. Hold the nose’s bridge tightly with the other hand to effectively control the blood. Avoid blowing as this is bound to worsen the nose bleeding. For heavy bleeding, use a cotton towel that is capable of absorbing all the blood.

Getting Comfortable

Get a chair and sit down in a comfortable position. Then, lean forward a little bit. Contrary to your instincts which may tell you to lean backwards, you’ll prevent vomiting this way. This is because the blood will go back to the body thus irritating the stomach when leaning backwards. Avoid lying down for the same reason. You can also stand but it’s better to sit so that your body can be in a more relaxed position.

Ending the Blood Flow

Pinching the nostrils is quite effective in putting an end to the nose bleeding. The condition is normally caused by the front part of the nose. While leaning forward, pinch the nostrils for about 10 minutes. Breathe through the mouth. The pinching technique clots the blood which as a result stops the flow. Other equally effective methods are: Using nasal spray and ice packs.

Preventing Nose Bleeding

  • Fight Dryness- If you live in an area with dry climate, use a humidifier to manage the situation. You can also use a nasal spray to keep the nasal passages wet.
  • Stay Cool- Keep your body cool by using a fan at home, wearing cotton and drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoid Nose Picking- People with this habit tend to insert foreign objects without their knowledge.

Important Tips:

  • Do not sniff after an episode of nose bleeding. This act will upset the blood clot thus cause blood to start flowing again.
  • Use a red piece of cloth when handling a nose bleed in case you’re afraid of blood.
  • Seek medical assistance if you bleed for more than 20 minutes or the episodes occur frequently.

Remember, excessive bleeding should not be taken lightly. In case you lose a lot of blood, it’s best to tell someone to get an ambulance for you immediately. Tilting the head backwards or even lying down are recipes for disaster that must be avoided at all cost. You can easily chock as a result because of the blood that is running down the throat. People with a history of nose bleeding must make effort in learning how to manage and consequently get rid of the condition.
